The old Scottish adage that "He who pays the piper calls the tune" aptly describes Buganda’s current predicament. Unless Baganda have control over Buganda’s financial revenue streams, Mengo’s programs will continue to be dependent on whichever forces control it’s funding. Baganda in the Diaspora took stock and decided to form Buganda Trust Inc, as a humble first step to address the predicament.
Buganda Trust, Inc. is a United States based non-profit corporation registered in the State of New Jersey. It’s primary purpose is to create a permanent and growing financial base that will support the Buganda nation all over the world for centuries to come.
The Trust founders have watched, with consternation, how Buganda that used to have a permanent trade representative in Zanzibar, whose mighty Navy controlled the shipping lanes on Lake Victoria, whose mighty Army controlled the trade routes between Zanzibar and the Egyptian interests further north, whose officers used to collect revenue from as far south as Karagwe has now been reduced to a subservient state. The Founders have noted that since the mid 19th century, our nation’s financial fortunes and social stability have been controlled by non Baganda whose honesty and goodwill towards Buganda are questionable at best. Indeed, since 1966, certain Uganda social-economic policies and constitutional developments have been specifically targeted to weaken the quality of Kiganda life. The situation had to be reversed.
Buganda Trust is one of many responses from Baganda to the financial weaknesses that threaten the existence and integrity of Buganda’s national identity and survival. The Trust will be formally launched at Ttabamiruka ‘07. Under the watchful eye of an international governing board of distinguished Baganda men and women, Buganda Trust will accumulate, invest and disburse financial resources to initiatives that demonstrably promote the long-term cultural and socio-economic success of the Buganda nation.
The journey shall be long but at the end of the day the hands that will pay the piper will certainly belong to the fifty four Clans.
